Padel balls explained: pressure, types and when to replace them

Padel balls are the cheapest item in your bag and the one that most changes how the game feels. A dead ball turns a good session into a slog: nothing comes off the glass, lobs land like beanbags, and you start swinging harder to compensate. Plenty of beginners play with balls that died weeks ago and blame their racket. Here is what is actually going on inside them.

What a padel ball actually is

A padel ball is a hollow rubber core, pressurised with air, wrapped in a felt cover. Structurally it is the same object as a tennis ball, built on much the same machinery and often by the same companies. The differences are small, deliberate, and enough to matter.

The International Padel Federation (FIP) rules set the numbers:

  • Diameter between 6.35 and 6.77 cm
  • Weight between 56.0 and 59.4 g
  • Bounce between 135 and 145 cm when dropped onto a hard surface from 2.54 m
  • Internal pressure between 4.6 and 5.2 kg per 2.54 square cm
  • A rubber sphere with a uniform surface, in white, yellow or another colour that contrasts clearly with the court

The bounce figure is the one worth remembering: a legal new ball rebounds a little over half the height it fell from. Almost everything below follows from that.

Padel ball vs tennis ball

Put the two side by side and you would struggle to tell them apart. There are two real differences.

  1. Diameter. Padel permits 6.35 to 6.77 cm. Tennis, under ITF rules, permits roughly 6.54 to 6.86 cm for standard balls. The padel ball is a touch smaller, and its permitted range starts lower.
  2. Pressure. A padel ball is pressurised a little softer, so it sits at the lower, tighter end of the bounce window. From the same 2.54 m drop, tennis allows a rebound of up to about 147 cm; padel caps at 145.

Same weight class, same felt, same look. But a padel court is calibrated around that specific bounce. The service lines sit 6.95 m from the net on a court measuring 20 m by 10 m, which leaves just over 3 m between the service line and the back glass. The ends are 4 m high, the first 3 m of that being wall. The whole game depends on the ball rebounding off that glass at a speed a human can read and answer.

Play with a tennis ball and it bounces a fraction higher, leaves the racket face hotter, and fires off the back glass with more life than the geometry allows for. You end up permanently rushed, balls that should sit up off the wall instead run away from you, and the rally patterns that define padel stop working. It is fine for ten minutes of messing about. It is not padel.

Pressure: the thing that kills them

This is the single most important fact about padel balls, and the one nobody tells beginners.

A padel ball starts dying the moment you open the tube, whether you play with it or not.

The tube is pressurised to match the inside of the ball. Crack the seal and that equilibrium is gone. From then on air leaks out through the rubber wall, slowly and continuously; the rate usually quoted is on the order of a psi or two in the first week. A tube opened in March and left in a bag will be noticeably flat by May, with pristine felt and zero games played. Felt wear and pressure loss are separate clocks, and pressure is the one that runs out first.

This is why "they still look new" is a bad reason to keep using them.

Fast, medium and slow balls

Some brands sell balls in speed variants. Broadly:

  • Slow or control balls are marginally lower pressure. They sit up a little more and favour longer rallies.
  • Fast balls are marginally livelier, quicker through the air and off the glass.
  • Altitude balls are a separate, rule-recognised category (see below), not a preference.

Be honest about the scale here. The gap between a brand's fast and slow ball is far smaller than the gap between a fresh ball and a three-week-old one. If you are a beginner or improver, this is not a decision worth spending energy on. Buy a standard ball from a competent maker, use it fresh, and revisit the question when your game is consistent enough to notice.

Altitude and temperature

Both are real effects, not marketing.

Altitude. Lower air pressure outside the ball means less resistance to the pressure inside it, so the ball expands slightly, bounces higher and flies faster. The FIP rules recognise this: above 1,000 m above sea level a different type of ball may be used, bouncing between 121.92 and 135 cm rather than 135 to 145. That threshold is higher than most people assume. Nearly every European city sits below it, so unless you are playing somewhere genuinely high (Mexico City and Bogota are both well over 2,000 m), altitude balls are not your problem.

Temperature. Cold air makes the gas inside contract: the ball bounces lower, feels heavy and dead, and the felt goes stiff. Heat does the reverse and makes everything livelier. A winter session on an outdoor court with a fresh tube can feel like a summer session with a tired one. Do not judge a ball's condition on a cold morning until it has had a few games to warm up.

How long a tube really lasts

Realistic answer for club-level play: two to three sessions of decent, competitive padel before the ball is noticeably flat. Some players stretch it to four. Under FIP rules, competition organisers must announce the ball type, the number of balls in play (two or three) and the ball-change policy in advance, with changes made after a set odd number of games. That tells you where the honest limit sits when the result matters.

If you play once a week and open a fresh tube each time, you are doing it properly. Drills chew through balls faster, because you are hitting the same three of them hundreds of times.

Cost is not the obstacle. A tube of three sits in a broad entry to mid band, roughly EUR 5 to 10 as general guidance depending on brand and where you buy, and boxes of a dozen tubes bring that down. This is the cheapest performance upgrade in the sport, and it is the one people skip.

How to tell a ball is dead

You do not need equipment. Four tests:

  • Bounce. Drop it from head height onto concrete. A live ball rebounds a bit over half way, roughly to your hip or waist, which is the same ratio the FIP test measures. A dead one struggles past your knee. Do it alongside a new ball; the difference is obvious.
  • Sound. A live ball gives a crisp pop off the racket face. A dead one thuds. Once you know the sound you will hear it before you feel it.
  • Zip off the glass. This is the padel-specific one. A dead ball hits the back glass and dies at the base of it instead of coming out to you. If everyone is suddenly digging balls out of the corner, check the ball, not your positioning.
  • Squeeze. A dead ball compresses easily between finger and thumb. A live one resists.

Fluffed, matted or bald felt is a secondary signal. It adds drag and slows the ball, but it usually just confirms what the bounce already told you.

Storage and ball pressurisers

Basic storage first: keep balls out of car boots. Repeated heat and cold cycling accelerates pressure loss. Room temperature, out of direct sun, is all that is asked.

Pressurisers are sealed containers that hold your balls at elevated pressure between sessions. The physics is sound: raise the pressure outside and the ball stops leaking, or slowly takes pressure back through the same rubber pores it lost it through. They work. But be clear about what they do and do not do.

  • They preserve pressure in balls that still have some. They will not resurrect a genuinely dead ball, and they do nothing at all for worn felt.
  • They only work if you are disciplined. Balls go back in after every session, immediately, while they still hold most of their pressure. Leave them in the bag for a fortnight and the device is a paperweight.
  • Players who are that disciplined report stretching a tube well beyond the usual two or three sessions. Treat the more spectacular figures with caution: most of them come from people selling pressurisers.
  • Simple screw-top models are a modest one-off cost (roughly EUR 20 to 40 as a general band); automatic ones cost considerably more. For a once-a-week player the payback is slow, and the honest answer is that you would be better off buying more tubes. For someone playing three or four times a week who is organised about it, they earn their keep.

That is the marginal truth: a real device, oversold, worth it for a minority.

Approved balls and competition

Sanctioned competition uses balls from the FIP's approved list, and the organiser names the brand and model in advance rather than leaving it to the players. Your national federation and most club leagues will specify an approved ball too, so check before a tournament rather than after.

For social play, none of this constrains you. Head, Bullpadel, Wilson, adidas, Babolat, Dunlop, Nox and StarVie all make competent balls, and various models from established makers appear on approved lists. The genuine differences between good balls are small: felt durability, how quickly pressure fades, how the seam holds up.

What to actually do

Buy a standard ball from any established maker. Open a fresh tube for anything that matters. Play three sessions on it, then demote it to warm-ups and drills. Do not agonise over speed variants, do not buy a pressuriser until you are playing several times a week, and do not use tennis balls.

Nobody ever lost a match because they picked the wrong brand. Plenty of people play a worse, slower, less enjoyable game every week because their balls are three weeks old and look absolutely fine.
